Caribbean and African music at SXSW!

Get excited… I am. This year’s SXSW, read South By Southwest, the annual music, film and arts festival held in Austin, Texas is including two showcases which until last year had no place on stage. So what are they you may be asking? Sounds from the Caribbean Showcase and Sounds from Africa Showcase.

This is significant in the realm of music in general. The fact that these two genres are being included and given their own space and time at the legendary festival shows how much these music styles have grown in popularity and demand. The world is a place for expression and sharing/mixing of cultures, this is an example of exactly that. For the first time, many fans will have the opportunity to be up close and live with their favorite artists from Africa and the Caribbean. Blessed.

So who’s all performing?

On the Caribbean Showcase you have some big legends representing… Mr. Vegas, Gyptian, Laza Morgan, and Soca god Machel Montano.

On the African Showcase you have the biggest names in Afrobeats… WizKid, Davido, DBanj, Sarkodie, Samini, R2Bees and more… That is in simple terms, an All-Star line-up of modern African artists.

If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, you’re probably reconsidering right now. The point is, this is a majorly positive step forward for African and Caribbean music, representing on a global stage. Big up yuh self!
